As a values-driven mutual, we’ve recently set our sights on becoming a more sustainable business. Our Cheadle Head Office was recently confirmed as carbon neutral thanks to our partnership with ClimatePartner. On top of this, we’ve also been awarded a Bronze accreditation from Investors in the Environment, thanks to our various green initiatives.
So, when Global Recycling Day came around on 18th March 2022, we were keen to get involved. Our team came together to support Cash for Kids’ ‘Wear, Share, Care’ campaign by bringing in their unwanted clothing and shoes, ready to be recycled.
Cash for Kids is a charity that aims to support children throughout the UK. For ‘Wear, Share, Care’, they are working with Textile Recycling International to encourage environmentally friendly behaviours and support underprivileged children, so for every tonne of clothing collected, Cash for Kids will receive £400 to donate.
According to the charity, roughly 1.75 million tonnes of clothing waste is created in the UK each year, 1.2 million tonnes of which is sent unnecessarily to landfill. Cash for Kids aims to reuse up to 75% of the donations they receive, so the more people that donate, the more the environment could benefit.
Nasrin Hossain, our Culture Director, said: “The Society was keen to take part in the ‘Wear, Share, Care’ campaign as it aligns with our own values of doing the right thing. Plus, sustainability and charitable giving are both high on our priorities list.
“It was great to see our people doing their bit and we’re so pleased with the contributions we have received so far. Every item of clothing counts towards this fantastic cause!”
In the space of the couple of weeks since Global Recycling Day, the team has already managed to pull together over 15 bags of clothing items for recycling and we hope that taking part in this initiative will inspire our people to think differently about sending clothes and shoes to landfill. Once Cash for Kids receive our donations, we’ll find out how much we’ve raised for the charity – keep an eye out on our social media for updates.
